DISUK produces a number of specialist solutions for specific applications and business areas. The links on the left cover some of these and explain where the DISUK products can help solve particular problems. If you have a specific storage or connectivity problem in any of these areas this information may give an idea of what we can produce.

Please contact us if there is something not covered but that you feel we may be able to help solve.

Reference

This section of our web site is designed to supply answers and explanations for some of the technical terms and devices used in the DISUK products. It is in no way complete but will hopefully be built up into a useful reference area. We will expand each section as time permits and add new sections as and when we are either asked to explain things or because it is of possible interest.

We will be looking for submissions for this area from manufacturers and designers and will of course be giving credit to the authors. If you have anything to say which other users would benefit from please send to the webmaster@disuk.com.

Secure Data Transit

With more and more reports of major data losses through tapes lost in transit the need to ensure all tapes are encrypted is becoming apparent to companies of all sizes. In the past the statement by most management was that their tapes in transit were being transported by a professional company so were safe. Many recent loses of tapes occurred when the media was being transported by one of these companies and the press release by Iron Mountain has made companies realise they can no longer use this as an excuse for not protecting theirs and their clients data.

Secure Data Vaulting

When a company designs a strategy for backup it usually is doing it for Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery reasons. The main concern is to ensure all the companies information (often its most valuable single asset) is copied and taken to a safe place. In this case the meaning of safe is normally seen as a place that will not likely be affected by a disaster such as flood, fire, aircraft crash etc., as the main site.

The data is often sent to a professional company who specialize in the secure storage of data. It is also possible that these same vaulting sites are a DR site so you can also recover and use the data on their site.

The problem faced by some companies is the issue of information security. If you send your tapes to another company can you be sure they will follow the same level of security as you will on your own site?

Using tape encryption means you can be sure there is no way anyone is copying or seeing your data at the off site storage.

Data Integrity

How can you ensure that the data being restored from a backup or archive tape has not been changed or modified in any way? By encrypting all the data being written to tape you can ensure that there have been now changes, additions or deletions. If information is needed to be proven to have been unchanged then the Paranoia and SafeTape products offer a simple and straightforward method or ensuring this data integrity whatever the system or operating environment.

Banking

Banks have a responsibility to their clients, be they business or private customers, to protect their information held by the bank. Recent losses of large amounts of information held on tape have cost these banks considerable sums of money but they have suffered far more due to indirect losses.

This is especially of a concern to Private Banks where their clients are high net worth individuals and even the loss of confidence by relatively few of these people would have a considerable impact to the viability of the business.

The ease of integration of the Paranoia and SafeTape products means implementation on all systems across a company’s infrastructure. By encrypting all the data rather than selected files companies can ensure all their data is protected.

Securing Medical Records

To ensure compliance with the regulations such as HIPPA, all records need to be secured against accidental or intentional compromise. When data is saved to tape either for long tern archive or simply for backup restore use then utilising the tape encryption available with the Paranoia2 and SafeTape products.

Products from the Paranoia family are already in use around the world to ensure compliance with regulations. Even before the regulations were formalised some companies and government departments in the health field had already seen the need and have implemented Paranoia units as part of their system to ensure record confidentiality. First sales in this area were made as far back as 1997.
